Exam Saturday

This morning Knuckles' extremely talented daughter Ophelia (it skips a generation) is taking her grade 2 piano exam at the Conservatory in an unnamed city.

Then it's off to look at Steinway uprights and buy sheet music for her and guitarist Son.

Let's hope Knuckles guards his language this time when he hears the latest prices for a piano.

My advice re: Steinway piano prices.

1. Take duct tape.
2. Ask wife to apply DT to your mouth immediately after asking the price of the piano your Talented Daughter absolutely MUST HAVE PLEASE DADDY.
3. After hearing price, avoid ingesting duct tape -- it's tough, but I managed not to.

We ended up with a studio Wurlitzer.

The sales guy kept saying 28 to 35 for the Steinway uprights. Knuckles thought 28 to 35 hundred. Sales guy meant 28 to 35 thousand. Daughter is undetered. Knuckles agreed to buy one (the cheapie) after her first solo concert in a city with at least two daily newspapers.

That gives Knuckles a minimum of 10 years to save up. And with any luck, Knuckles will be dead by then.

Later spoke to a neighbor about pianos. Surprise, surprise, neighbor's family is in piano reburbishing business. So we'll probably be able to nail down a solid instrument at a less brand-intensive price.
